Still Trainer Time

Well you've been indoors and riding on the trainer all winter. The hours of stationary cycling with a never changing landscape in front of you and a pool of sweat covering your bike is a getting monotonous. But, alas spring is finally getting here. Now I know that not everyday is perfect in the spring because we still have the rain showers (that bring May flowers) and on the sunny days, the pollen can be thick. It is great to get out and train outdoors but let's not forget the value of that wonderful trainer.

In a race, which is what we specifically train for, we are usually on a closed course with just us and the other competitors. Well usually in training, we have limited access to a similar environment. Riding the trainer provides up with an opportunity to ride really hard intervals without the fear of being hit by a car, crashing into other riders or falling off from exhaustion. You can do very specific intervals on the trainer throughout the race season that can help build strength and power safely. Many times when riding with a group, your workout is dictated by the group. On the trainer, you are the only judge of how hard your effort can go. Also, you're on your bike. Unlike a spin bike, this is the machine that you will be racing on. Adaptation to your bike fit is crucial for peak performance.

So get out there, ride and enjoy the mild spring weather and be encouraged when your coach says "lets do a trainer workout!"
